Boulder Dushanbe Relief FundHelping the People of Tajikistan Through the
|
Thank you, everybody, who supported our efforts! Thanks to you we raised over $14,000 to buy food for the people of Tajikistan! |
The country of Tajikistan - and its capital Dushanbe - are in the grips of one of the harshest winters in decades. News reports of food and fuel shortages abound, as do global appeals for aid.
According to the United Nations, the cold is so severe that the country's hydroelectric power stations can barely produce any electricity or heat. The people of Dushanbe are suffering at least half of every day - during what is being called "the worst winter in living memory" - with no heat at all. In other parts of Tajikistan it's even worse. The U.N. also estimates that at least 260,000 people are currently without adequate food.
Radio Free Europe reports that "Newborn babies, infants, and the elderly are suffering most. Doctors and nurses in maternity wards deliver babies by candlelight in dark, freezing rooms. According to official figures, 232 newborn babies died in maternity wards last month," and "More than half a million Tajiks are estimated to be food-insecure, while at least 260,000 need immediate food aid."
In short, the people of Tajikistan are starving and freezing.
Boulder, Colorado, and Dushanbe, Tajikistan, share a special and unique bond.
The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse, donated by the people of Dushanbe to the people of Boulder |
Over the course of the next three years, the teahouse was built by hand, with contributions from artisans all over Tajikistan. The teahouse was then carefully packed and shipped to Boulder in pieces, where it was assembled, and is now known to thousands as the much beloved Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse.
In exchange, Boulder is building a Boulder-style cyber cafe for the city of Dushanbe. This cafe will be a model of many different green construction techniques, giving Dushanbe not only a cyber cafe, but a living model of new energy-saving construction techniques.
But right now the people of Dushanbe - the people who so generously gave us the beautiful teahouse, and who have proudly been Boulder's sister city for more than 25 years - need something much more immediate. Something much more urgent.
They are starving.
They need food.
AND THEY NEED IT NOW
